Oman Orders C-130J Super Hercules

Lockheed Martin has signed a contract with the Sultanate of Oman for a C-130J Super Hercules. The aircraft, to be delivered in mid-2012, is in the longer C-130J-30 configuration.

Oman currently operates a fleet of three C-130Hs purchased in the early 1980s. The new C-130J will be used to further support Omani operations where its ability to operate out of remote austere airstrips will be invaluable.

Air France Flight 447 – In-Depth Weather Analysis

Over at weathergraphics.com a very detailed meteorological analysis of Air France flight 447 has been published.

Air France flight 447 (AF447), an Airbus A330-200 (F-GZCP / MSN: 660) , was reported missing in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean in the early morning hours of June 1, 2009. The plane was enroute from Rio de Janeiro (SBGL) to Paris (LFPG). Speculation suggested that the plane may have flown into a thunderstorm. The objective of this study was to isolate the aircraft’s location against high-resolution satellite images from GOES-10 to identify any association with thunderstorm activity. Breakup of a plane at higher altitudes in a thunderstorm is not unprecedented; Northwest Flight 705 in 1963 and more recently Pulkovo Aviation Flight 612 in 2006 are clear examples.

Guy flying non-stop for a month

A guy named Mark Malkoff recently just started a crazy journey. He’s traveling across the US, continually being on a plane for one month, only getting off to change to a different plane at an airport. During the whole trip he’ll solely be flying with AirTran.

You can follow his journey on Twitter and markonairtran.com

Mark Malkoff is already known for living in an Ikea store for a week.
