Hawaiian Airlines choose Airbus A350 XWB and A330

Airbus today announced that Hawaiian Airlines has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus for 6 Airbus A350 XWB-800s and 6 A330-200s, selecting Airbus aircraft for the first time in their history.

Hawaiian Airlines will begin receiving the new A330-200s starting in 2012 while A350 deliveries will begin in 2017. Both will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent engines.

The A350 XWB-800s will seat 322 passengers in a two-class configuration (First and Coach) and have a range of 6,900 nautical miles, which will give Hawaiian the capability to fly nonstop between Hawaii and Asia, Australasia, the Americas and Europe. The A350 carries 24 percent more passengers and is 20 percent more fuel efficient per seat mile than Hawaiian’s current fleet.

The A330-200 will seat 305 passengers in a two-class configuration. With an operating range of 5,500 nautical miles, the A330 can fly significantly farther than Hawaiian’s current fleet and will provide the ability to serve all of North America and points in eastern Asia nonstop from Hawaii. In addition, the A330 carries 45 more passengers and is more fuel efficient than Hawaiian’s current fleet.

The aircraft will be deployed within the airline’s Pacific network, which currently extends from Hawaii to nine cities in the Western United States and three cities in the South Pacific.

  1. AIRBUS 350XWB EXCELLENT CHOICE !!!!!!! BOEING 787 IS FOREIGN MADE ( CHINA , JAPAN, ITALY, CHINA, ETC, CHEAP LABOR ) MOST ALL PARTS ARE MADE OUTSIDE OF THE US AND BOEING TRIES TO HIDE THAT FACT. BOEING IS GREEDY. AT LEAST AIRBUS IS A STAND UP COMPANY. NO PR TRICKERY. PLUS THEY HAVE THE VISION FOR THE FUTURE AND THE SKY IS NOT THE LIMIT ( ie 38O ) AIRBUS IS VISIONARY. THANK YOU AIRBUS, YOU INSPIRE THE NEW AND OLD GENERATIONS OF PILOTS AND AVIATION ENTHUSIAST AND THEIR MOTHERS AND FATHERS AROUND THE WORLD. THANK YOU SO MUCH. MARK CHELI

  2. Hawaiian went with Airbus is because of delivery and availability as per a blog on Flightglobal with the CEO of Hawaiian. Airbus has few orders for those aircraft and open slots to plug in Hawaiian on both the A350 line and the A330. 767’s are such a hot commodity that there aren’t enough for Hawaiian, or anyone else, to lease in the future so they could get delivery slots with Boeing. Otherwise, I would bet they would still be with Boeing.
Airbus went to many of the same suppliers as Boeing is using throughout the world for the 787 to ask them to make parts for the 350. What, you think they build it all their parts themselves? Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Russia, Turkey, Morrocco, Italy, Spain, and the Czech Republic are just a small few of the countries that supply parts for the A380 alone. I’m not talking small parts either. Boeing happily announces their suppliers on their website.
Airbus a stand up company? Airbus is government subsidized and is bleeding Euros to the point that they are going to do yet another layoff. The back door deals they have to do to make buyers go with them is anything but stand up? Let’s look at United’s A320 purchase a number of years ago. Why did they go with Airbus and not the Boeing 737NG? The maintenance contract. United doesn’t have to pay for any engine repairs or replacements on that aircraft while they fly them. That was a sweet deal for United but pretty dirty pool when you aren’t a public company.
My opinion, Airbus is not a visionary, what is so special about playing catch-up? The A380 is actually a copy of Boeing’s first 747 model that didn’t get built because they didn’t see the need for the 2 decks and it would not have been an efficient freighter. It’s available to see on the Discovery Channel’s 747 history show online should you choose.
